Our view: Today's the day: Get out and vote

Election Day is here.

After weeks of being bombarded with political messages in newspapers, TV, radio and in the mail, it finally is time for voters to have their say.

Today is the day when democracy shines and the people can demonstrate their will. The only way to take part, however, is to get to the polls.

If you haven’t voted already, build some extra time into your schedule today to participate in our democracy. If you want to do some research, we’ve compiled a helpful database on the candidates in local races – including answers to questions in their own words – on our Election Central page, Then get out and vote.

Voting usually doesn’t take long and your polling place should be close to home. You can find your local polling place through the DeKalb County government website at

What you say there, with your ballot, will make a difference.

There are two hotly contested races for Congress in DeKalb County. Democrats are trying to pick up U.S. House seats held by Republicans this fall – and President Donald Trump and the GOP are fighting hard to defend them.

Which group do you trust to lead America in the right direction?

Voters also will choose the state’s next governor, who will determine the course of Illinois for the next four years. Are you happy with how we’re doing, or is it time for a change?

Voters also will choose the next DeKalb County clerk and recorder, and County Board members, whose policy-making decisions hit closest to home.
