Strohacker: Genoa Chamber gearing up for summer

Did somebody say the “s” word? Yes – believe it or not – SUMMER is just around the corner!

The Genoa Area Chamber of Commerce will be kicking off summer in style with several community events and festivities. You won’t want to miss out on all the fun, so mark your calendars now.

The Genoa Farmer’s Market will start its season Saturday, May 26. We will host five markets this year, held on the fourth Saturday of each month from May to September. Future dates are June 23, July 28, Aug. 25 and Sept. 22. Markets will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the corner of Route 72 and Genoa Street in downtown Genoa.

Every market will feature more than 20 vendors offering a variety of products including homemade jams, honey, breads, chocolates, eggs, fresh produce, jewelry, flowers, soaps and more. There will be live music, inflatables, special guests and local favorites. The markets are a great place to meet up with friends, spend the afternoon with your family or just swing by for some quick shopping.

Sharing the day with our first farmers market will be our inaugural School’s Out for Summer Celebration. The Genoa Chamber is teaming up with the Kishwaukee Valley Wanderers to offer this day full of activities. You can join us for just one ... or all of the events on Saturday, May 26, at the Genoa Veteran’s Club, 311 S. Washington St.

The day will start with a poker walk at 10 a.m. This event is family-friendly and will begin and end at the Veteran’s Club. Attendees will go to participating businesses while enjoying a walk through Genoa and collecting selfies. On their return to the Vet’s Home, they will be entered to win one of several raffle prizes.

From 2 to 5 p.m. at the VFW, the Genoa-Kingston PTO will host its famous “fun fair,” sponsored by Mark Carlson State Farm. There will be music, a dunk tank and food for purchase.

From 5 to 9 p.m., the “Band” Garden will be open and will have special discounts for all veterans. There will be live music from several bands for your listening enjoyment. Starting the show will be the student-led band Diamondback, followed by local favorites The Couch Coins, and the teacher-led band No F’s Given. General admission will be $7. Those wearing Cogs gear will get in for $5. All veterans and children age 10 and younger get in free. A collection of used band instruments will be taken at the event to help future band students.

We can’t wait to see you in Genoa! For questions about any of our events, call the Chamber at 815-784-2212 or visit to learn more. Stop by the chamber office at 113 N. Genoa St. for information on Genoa, coupons and more. We would love to meet you in person. Come Explore Genoa!
