Our View: Trump is unfit to serve

President Donald Trump listens during a Jan. 9 meeting with lawmakers on immigration policy in the Cabinet Room of the White House in Washington. Trump used profane language Jan. 11 as he questioned why the U.S. should permit immigrants from certain countries, according to three people briefed on the conversation. The White House did not deny the comment.[]

Donald Trump is unfit to be president.

This is a truth that transcends party platforms or political ideology.

We agree with many priorities that Republicans in Washington have pursued this year.We agree that federal tax reform is necessary and that there are serious problems with our nation’s immigration system, including illegal immigration, that should be addressed.

The same goes for our nation’s health care system, where care seems to become less affordable with each passing year despite a law that promised better.

But Trump is not going to lead America or the rest of the world to a better place. With each new outburst, he further discredits the presidency among the American people and nations around the world.

In not quite a year as president, Trump has proved time and again that:

• He has the temperament of a child.

• He cares only about himself.

• He is a serial liar.

• He is a racist.

As the entire world now must know, Trump referred to African nations, along with El Salvador and Haiti, as “s---hole countries” in a meeting on immigration reform Thursday, and asked why the U.S. didn’t encourage more immigration from countries like Norway, which is a majority white, European nation.

Trump denies using that specific language, but some who were present, including Illinois Sen. Dick Durbin, said Trump said exactly that. The White House itself does not deny it.

The fact that the president would say this in any setting is an unmitigated embarrassment. But it’s just the latest in a string of damaging embarrassments.

The American president long has been regarded as “leader of the free world.” But the world will not follow this president, with his sneering lies, the endless bile he spews on social media, and his racist dog-whistle rhetoric.

If Trump refuses to resign, he should be isolated. Republicans and Democrats alike should denounce blatant lies and racist statements without holding back.

This is not about politics any longer. It is about our values as Americans.

President Trump does not represent them.
