JOLIET – The Louis Joliet Mall has announced a "youth supervision" policy will begin Friday so the mall can "continue offering a pleasant, family-friendly shopping experience."

The new rules state an adult, parent or legal guardian 21 or older must escort anyone 17 or younger at all times from 5 p.m. through the mall’s closing time on Fridays and Saturdays, according to a news release posted Monday on the mall's website. The program is based on a study of similar practices across the country.

“We want to thank Joliet Mayor Bob O’Dekirk, the Joliet Police Department and our community partners for their time and input as we put this program together,” Louis Joliet Mall Marketing Director Sandy Maldonado-Martinez said. “This policy allows us to continue offering a pleasant, family-friendly shopping experience here at Louis Joliet Mall.”

Signs were posted throughout the mall Monday explaining the policy, according to the release.

On Friday, mall security will be present at various entrances personally handing out information about the new rules. One adult can accompany up to six minors, and teen mall workers will be required to show identification and proof of employment during restricted hours.

"Security may ask shoppers and guests to show proof of age with valid identification such as a driver’s license, military ID, state identification card, passport or visa," the release states.

The new policy does not apply to the mall’s Cinemark theatre.

For more information about the policy, security will be available to answer questions throughout the mall.
