DeKalb Target honored for creating jobs at distribution center

DeKALB – Target in DeKalb was named a recipient in the ninth annual Economic Development in Illinois Awards.

The awards, known as “the Edies,” honor outstanding economic development projects that bring jobs, growth and prosperity to Illinois communities, according to an Illinois Chamber of Commerce news release.

Target was among five companies honored in 2016 in recognition for the $50 million conversion of the DeKalb regional distribution center into an upstream distribution center, which will handle seasonal and specialty merchandise for one-third of the U.S., according to the release.

Target more than doubled employment from 350 to 750 to operate the facility and continues to hire, assisted by mass hiring events promoted by the DeKalb County Economic Development Corp. and Kishwaukee College, according to the release.

This year’s awards were supported by the Illinois Economic Development Association and sponsored by Nicor Gas, according to the release.

Other award recipients included the Amazon Fulfillment centers in Edwardsville and Romeoville, Zurich North America in Shaumburg, Illinois Tollway in Downers Grove and Fuyao Glass North America in Decatur.
